Bunk Beds

Sam & Juliet share a crowded room... as you can see here and here. The idea of bunk beds has been floating around aimlessly for months and we FINALLY got it together & dealt with it. Bunk beds are expensive. Mattresses are expensive, and Sam desperately needed a new mattress to replace the tiny single piece of foam he'd created a nesting hole in.... literally. He slept in a hole created by his own body weight. So... my husband decided he'd like to build the bunk beds himself using the leftover wood from last year's deck project. SUCCESS! Once they were put together the kids & my mother got busy painting them.

Sam requested that his top half be red and Juliet wanted her bottom to be pink. She also requested a rainbow ladder and Sam was okay with that so long as no pink or purple touched his red. So after a couple of days and 2 brand new outfits of Juliet's covered in paint (argh!) they were done.
Complete with glittery stars for Juliet to gaze up to...

The kids (& me) are very happy with the success of the project and everyone is sleeping well. I've re-arranged their room to create a lot more space & turned "Sam's Sea" corner into a cozy reading area with bean bag chairs. The new found space has also doubled as a hockey arena courtesy of Sam. The last bit of effort will be to remove the blades from the ceiling fan so that Sam doesn't accidentally get decapitated climbing in or out of bed.

I'd like to be under the sea...

My mom has been in town since Sofie was born... so why not put her straight to work right? We'd been planning on painting Sam & Juliet's room since they moved in together during the summer but never got around to it. Sam made a special request to sleep "under water" so here's what he ended up with in his little corner of the room...

Juliet wanted a princess, a castle & a guard. A guard? Where did she get that idea? Grama wasn't up for that challenge so she had to settle with a garden... and she was just fine with that.

Both kids are very pleased with their new decor however that didn't stop Sam from requesting that the next time Grama comes "I'd like to be in the North Pole."  I'd better go get some white paint... lol.

Baby's Room

Done. FINALLY. I went super traditional and chose pink. When my mom was here before Christmas she & the kids went at 'er and got the room painted. But I wasn't satisfied and we ran out of time. Something was missing. With that in mind... I hit the ground running with the marvelous idea to add some stripes to the walls. Who's dumb idea was that again?? Oh yeah. Mine.

Soon after I began taping out the pattern I seriously began to reconsider. What was I thinking? Two days and numerous contractions later the taping was done... and I was losing interest. I decided to give it a rest for the weekend. Yesterday I was at it again. I mixed the left over pink paint with half a gallon of white paint to create a light pink for the stripes. On it went with a roller. I was so tempted to just leave it at that and pass off the roller marks as texture but I didn't. Today I tackled the actual texture I wanted to add to the stripes to finish the job. I used a brush and roughly painted a second coat on all the small stripes. Then I added some raspberry colorant to the light pink paint and roughly rubbed it over the largest stripe.

There were NUMEROUS times I wanted to give up or to just do a half-ass job... but I didn't. I pulled through and the room looks fabulous. I wish I had different curtains but I really want to keep the room dark for sleeping... so I just added some white sheers over Sam's old brown curtains. I set up my changing alcove in the old closet and added some artwork. All that's missing.... the baby. Oh and maybe some newborn clothes & PJ's... fitted crib sheets.... diapers... wipes....

Holy Weekend Batman

It's no wonder I have a headache. Although I feel like I did a lot of nothing this weekend... my body (& the back yard) say otherwise. My tolerance for my children is dwindling. It must be Sunday night.

Sam is on a bender of not listening. It's almost less tolerable then a 2 year old. A few days ago (Thursday I think) he lost his "cool computer games" privilege because he wouldn't get up in the morning & get dressed for school after numerous requests. I told him he needed 5 stickers before he could have it back... and would get a sticker every time he listened the FIRST time. He has yet to get a sticker. AND... yesterday after being sent to his room he told me he hated me (a first) and that he was going to eat candy whenever he wanted to. Apparently for a 6 year old that is a threat.

It wasn't all bad. I played in the back yard like I said I would and for the first little while the kids were a big help. We moved a HUGE pile of logs, complete with wood-eating ants, slugs, millipedes, worms and spiders. The best part was when I carried a log all the way across the yard with a palm sized spider on it, only to notice it when I put the log down and he scurried off. Awesome.
