un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, SEPT!!!

Happy birthday to Sam... Happy birthday to Sam... Happy birthday, happy birthday, happy birthday to Sam!!

My baby boy turned 7 today. Wow. 7!!!!! He was very excited. Yesterday we went to the grocery store & he picked out a cake. A mint chocolate mousse cake... which Juliet understood to be a MOOSE cake.. and wanted NOTHING to do with it. Sam tried to explain to her that it's not made of moose but just called that because the chocolate on the top is in the shape of a moose. I almost didn't want to intervene in their conversation to explain what mousse was... but I did. "Ohhhhhhh".

We didn't have any plans for the day really. Sam wants to have his birthday party at the movie theatre so we have to wait until there's an appropriate movie playing. Sam has decided that "Hotel Transylvania" will be the one but it doesn't open until the end of September. So all he wanted to do today was..... go to McDonalds. We hit McD's for lunch & East Side Mario's for supper where Sam was serenaded by the waitstaff in a loud ESM version of happy birthday. Sam had the cutest look on his face... a mixture of happiness, shock & embarrassment. It was good. We got video but I'll have to post it tomorrow... for now here are some pics.

the BIG five!

So Juliet turned 5 on Monday. Can you believe it? FIVE! We celebrated with her friends on Saturday. The "pretend" birthday with her friends. Her "real" birthday is with her family. So... "if I'm going to be 5 on my birthday with my friends am I going to be six on my real birthday?" I had to explain that you can't just have a party on the actual day of your birthday if it isn't on the weekend and you have school. So now both my kids expect 2 birthdays... the pretend one & the real one. Awesome.

I tossed the idea of having a party for Juliet that involved the LEAST amount of responsibility on my part because I assumed I'd be majorly preoccupied with Lungs McGee... and I was. BUT... in the end we just had the party at home and winged it with the help of a couple of good friends. "It's mostly girls" I said... "girls aren't as crazy as boys". But they are a heck of a lot LOUDER!!! Geez. At one point I could have sworn I was at a rock concert. And the neighbours across the street were sure we had Disney Land in the back yard.  Overall I'd say we were successful. I was prepared.

The night before Juliet & I made the cupcakes. I experimented with the idea of rainbows...

Not as successful as I had hoped... but cool nonetheless.

The Pretend Birthday

For the past 2 years we've had Sam's real birthday & his pretend birthday. His real birthday falls during the summer holidays and it's sometimes difficult to round up a group of his buddies so we celebrate with family in the summer & have another party with his friends once the school year starts. Yesterday was the 'pretend' birthday.

Par-tay!

We... the kids & I, spent the weekend in Montreal. It was fabulous. We stayed at one of my best friend's wonderful NDG pads & celebrated her daughter's 6th birthday. I love it there. I off and on wish we too lived in Montreal... but I'm not thrilled about the idea of raising kids in the city. Nevertheless, every time I'm there I get a bit nostalgic.

So our oldest kids are exactly 4 weeks apart, both turning six this year. This weekend was Lyric's 6th birthday party. I'll let the pics do most of the talking. Who said you can't have a pony in the city?

now we are Six

Six years ago plus a day I lost 30 pounds overnight. It was a miracle. Now if only I could pull that off without giving birth to a child. My first baby turned 6 yesterday... that's pretty amazing. We went to Boston Pizza with family for dinner & had a great time. Sam ordered hamburgers as usual. He didn't eat much because his tummy was hurting and he had gas. Who knew a child could produce such stink? I guess when you're 6 things mutate. He conveniently let one go on his father's lap just as all the waitresses came with his cake & to sing happy birthday. No bother to Sam of course but my husband & step father were mortified because who blames the stink on the kids?? Surely the waitresses pinned it on one of the men. HA!

After BP we hit DQ for some soft serve.... mmmmm. Or not. To compliment my son's gas was the faint smell of sewage seeping out from an open drain in the floor. Delish. And then my mother sits down and shares with us that the woman in the bathroom with her was disgusting. Of course we all sat there waiting to see who, or what, would walk out. Maybe she had hamburgers for supper too? Lovely evening. We have such class it's riDQulous.
